Classroom Connection: 5th Grade

I've been working with 5th grade reading this week.  We have been working on self-questioning while reading and I did a lesson on "thick vs. thin questions," using the picture book, Train to Somewhere.  Thin questions are those questions that are "right there" and answers can be found in the text.  Thick questions are those that are deeper and require more thinking from your own head and from parts of the story to answer (inferencing).

students wrote down questions while I read the book, then we classified them as "thick" or "thin."  Ones in the middle, we determined that we needed more information to be able to answer.
